St. Patrick’s Day Slime Recipe

Switch up your St. Patrick’s Day projects this year and let the kids get messy with this fun slime recipe. Change up the colors and make slime for any holiday you can think of! The kids love it, and it’s super easy to make.

Recipe for One Batch of Slime

1.6 ounce container of Glitter Glue
1/3 Cup Clear Elmer’s glue
1/2 Cup Liquid Starch
1/2 Cup Warm Water
Optional- Extra Glitter
Measuring Cups
Large Bowl

Directions

1. Pour 1/2 cup of warm water into large bowl.

2. Add 1.6 ounces of glitter glue.

3. Add 1/3 cup clear Elmer’s glue.

4. Add 1/2 cup liquid starch.

5. Add additional glitter if desired.

6. Mix with hands until slime forms.

Classroom Application

I did this project first with a group of students in grades 1-6, then with students in Preschool and Kindergarten. The project worked well with both groups.

For the older kids, I had them pair up in twos to make a single batch of slime. Some groups started with green glitter glue, and some gold, and I had the option of adding either green or gold glitter to their slime. All of the groups chose to add both colors of glitter, which looked quite nice and appropriate for St. Patrick’s Day.

Some of the kids added too much glitter to their slime, and when they played with it the glitter came off on their hands and the table. My advice is to keep the additional glitter to a minimum if at all possible to try and avoid this issue.

Each pair of kids split their batch in two, and were given Ziploc bags with their name written on them to take their slime home. Splitting the batch in two still provided ample slime for them to play with, and all the kids were satisfied.

For the younger kids, I broke them into groups of three, and assigned a helper to each group that was either an elementary school student or an adult. Some of the kids in this age group didn’t want to touch the slime or get their hands messy, so it actually worked quite well to have three in a group.

Each batch was divided in three and placed in Ziploc bags. None of the younger kids had an issue with the amount of slime they were able to take home, as the batch provided plenty even when split into three.

Tips and Tricks

• To avoid a mess of glitter on tables and floors, omit the additional glitter option. (It was messy!) The glitter glue should add plenty of sparkle.
• Instead of additional glitter, add confetti in the shape of shamrocks. If you’re making slime for another holiday, look for hearts, Christmas trees, snowmen, etc.
• Adding extra glitter to a batch that is too slimy will help thicken it, but beware of the additional mess factor! Glitter was the only thing that helped in the case of one of our batches- extra clear glue just made it stickier and extra liquid starch helped minimally.
• If you can’t find 1.6 ounce containers of glitter glue, combine an approximate amount of glitter glue and clear Elmer’s glue so that it equals 1/2 cup.
• Clean-up of the bowls with the extra glitter was easier than I though it was going to be, but be prepared for stragglers after the initial washing. 😉
