These Cinnamon-Applesauce Ornaments were a great activity to do with my preschool son.
RECIPE:
1 cup and 2 tbsp. cinnamon (or 4.12 oz. bottle of cinnamon)
3/4 cup applesauce
1-10 drops of your favorite essential oilsMix until it’s combined and forms a ball. Roll out portions in between pieces of plastic wrap or wax paper and then cut into shapes with cookie cutters. Punch holes out with a straw to string on ribbon later for ornament making. Bake on a cookie sheet at 200 for 2 hours.
I followed the original recipe exactly. Rolling the mixture between wax paper was a great idea, except I didn’t have any on hand, so I rolled it onto my table and put plastic wrap on top when I rolled it out. I would suggest using something between the mixture and your rolling pin, it is much easier to work with and less messy.
Since the ornaments will be cinnamon scented, I recommend adding an oil that blends well with cinnamon. Essential oils that would go well include: cinnamon, clove, copaiba, wild orange, frankincense, and shield blend.
After the ornaments were cooled, I used white fabric paint in a squeeze bottle to paint the “icing” onto the gingerbread man. Different colors and textures of ribbon make them unique from one another and super fun.
