I used some of my favorite leftover material from a wall hanging to make this table runner. I have never been a precise sewer, so making the strips uneven allows for error and gives it a cool look.
Cut all of your material into blocks measuring about two inches bigger than your desired width. I cut my material at 15 inches, but ended up with a 13 inch width. (The varying angles of the fabric made the runner uneven so I lost 2 inches when trimming it up) Once you have the material cut at your desired width, take a straight edge and cut out triangular-like strips, with one end being wider than the other. Make your skinny sides at least 3/4 of an inch wide to allow for the seam allowance. This is really simple, and no two have to be exact! Most of my strips were about an inch or so wider on one end than the other.
Sew your strips in any pattern your like, sewing the wide end of a piece to a skinny end. Continue sewing them together until you have reached your desired length. Trust me- you will have to straighten up the edges.
I chose not to put batting in this runner and simply added a patterned fabric backing. I put my sewing machine on the largest stitch setting and machine quilted along the lines of the fabric pieces.
Once quilted, I made some binding. I made it by cutting 1 1/2 inch strips of material, sewed them together so that it would reach all the way around my runner. Then I folded the strips in half and ironed the fold; I went back and then folded in both sides of the strip so that the ends met in the middle. Making binding is super easy, especially when it is for a small piece like a table runner.
