Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things. Philippians 4:8
One of the most misleading things we as believers can tell ourselves is that the things we expose ourselves to does not affect us. The Bible is full of passages warning us to protect our hearts and our minds, and for good reason. Things that we see and hear can never be unseen or unheard.
Many studies have shown the numbing affects that exposure to violence and coarse language can cause over time. The more of the world we allow ourselves to ingest, the more worldly our mindset becomes.
1 Peter 2:11-12 warns us as Christians to be in the world, but not of it. Romans 12:2 says to not conform to the patterns of this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Our minds can only be renewed if we expose it to things that are good and holy in the sight of God.
With the entire world at our fingertips with the touch of a button, we must be careful to protect our hearts and minds from the things of this world that aren’t good for us. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t know what is going on around us, but it does mean that we must be vigilant.
How are we spending our free time? How are our children spending their free time? What might we be letting into our minds that isn’t pleasing to God?
